New Developments: Axiom Introduces Lightweight Compound for Structural Automotive Parts

Following four years of collaboration with the University of Toronto, Axiom is proud to announce the creation of AX Gratek PP40—a groundbreaking light weight & high strength alternative to heavy glass filled polypropylene parts. This hybrid composite featuring low % graphene nanoplatelets with glass fibers is the perfect light weight solution to metal & heavy glass filled 40-60% PP components. This innovative material, currently patent pending, has achieved up to 20% improvement in tensile strength, all while achieving an impressive 18% weight reduction compared to commercial PPGF60% parts.

The partnership between Axiom and the University of Toronto has been instrumental in bringing this breakthrough material to life. By combining the expertise of Axiom’s leading engineers with the support of U of T researchers, this project has reached new heights in material science. As the automotive industry seeks lighter, high-impact components to reduce vehicle weight, Axiom aims to meet this demand with structural parts that offer enhanced performance without added weight.

AX Gratek offers a significant advantage in machinery efficiency. With a lower glass fiber content than commercial PPGF50-60%, it reduces wear and tear on the equipment. Additionally, this lightweight material aligns with sustainability goals, as its use contributes to lower emissions and supports the industry’s transition toward greener solutions.

While AX Gratek is not yet available on the market, Axiom is actively working toward bringing this material into production by early 2025.
